Travel Mongolia to experience a winter culture like you're never seen before - an outdoor enthusiast's dreams. Discover Ice festival on the freshest watered Lake Khuvsgul and Camel Show in Gobi desert and participate in Mongols’ Luner New Year Celebration Ceremony. A virtual winter wonderland to discover awaits you!
We have been under its spell for a long time, dating to the days when it appeared in musty atlases as “Outer Mongolia.” So, it’s with great joy that we introduce people to this magnificent land during the off season. This trip incorporates two enchanting winter festivals: the boisterous Camel Festival in the Gobi and the Ice Festival at Khovsgol Lake, and since it is winter, the droves of tourists are refreshingly scarce – so we may relish the festivities without the crowds.
Ice Festival on the Lake Khuvsgul. Vast areas of Lake Khuvsgul have remained basically untouched due to its rough terrain. Gorgeous mountain ranges bound the lake from all sides. The most impressive of all are the Sayan Mountains that are located south from Lake Khuvsgul with Khoridol Saridag mount being the utmost summit in the whole north region. It stands right on the Mongolian and Russian border overlooking both countries from the height of 3491 m. This is the world of glaciers, stormy winds and fascinating landscape.
In February for just 2 weeks the trails leading to Khoridol Saridag becomes crowded with tens of tourists. Both newcomers and winter sport funs come here every year to explore the glaciers, to meet friends and sing songs round the camp fire.
In February, Khuvsgul Lake - ice festival will take place in Khatgal village and on Lake Khuvsgul shores. The festival will provide boundless opportunities for Lake Khuvsgul visitors to enjoy winter sports and outdoor activities including downhill and cross-country skiing, ice-fishing contests, etc.
Khuvsgul can be as cold as -30°C at night in Feb. Thermal protection is essential, especially for feet, fingers and face. Also, UV protecting sunglasses are required for eye protection. The ice of the lake is min. 2m thick and can hold a car or even a large lorry easily.

Did you know that the Gobi is the coldest desert in the world?
Mongolia 's two-humped Bactrian camel is nicknamed by local people "the Gobi Ship". It inhabits the Gobi desert in the southern part of Mongolia. When someone says "desert", most of us conjure up images of camels, dried and bleached animal bones, or perhaps a person dragging along the desert floor, hoping and praying for the oasis in their mirage to be real. Whatever the vision, it almost always includes sand and heat. Lots of scorching heat. You might be surprised then to learn that it snows in some deserts.
