Now there are only 400 Tsaatan people in Mongolia and they inhabit the remotest but amazing beautiful mountain taigas. The Tsaatan love their nomadic lifestyle of “breeding reindeer and sleeping in huts”. This tour offers an outstanding introduction to this diverse, ancient and extraordinarily beautiful country, visiting areas and sites that many other tours do not visit and a rare chance to visit the Tsaatans. You will travel to the most picturesque place in Mongolia the “Darkhad Valley” and have the chance to visit families of nomads, remote Buddhist monasteries and traditional events, and to take part in horse-riding or guided walking. The Dukha or Duhalar (Mongolian Tsaatan) are a small Tuvan Turkic community of reindeer herders living in northern most edge of Khvusgul Privince of Mongolia.  Only 44-45 Dukha families remain, totaling somewhere between 200 and 400 people. They ride, breed, milk, and live off of reindeer. The name “tsaatan” means “reindeer herder” as in “tsaa buga” (reindeer). Discover Mongolia on horseback on your next Mongolia holiday. Detailed Itinerary

Day1. Fly to Khuvsgul Lake.

We will pick you up from your hotel and transfer to airport. Then you will fly to Murun town in North Mongolia. After landed in the town, our guide and driver will pick you up. Then, we will drive north in the direction of Khuvsgul Lake (130 km). Lake Khuvsgul is the second deepest fresh water lake in Central Asia. It is a huge 2750 square km alpine lake (130km in length and 30 km in width) surrounded by mountain chains of more than 2000 m high, thick pine and larch forests and lush meadows with grazing yaks and horses. Hundreds small rivers and streams feed the lake with crystal clear water. Water exist the lake through only one river, the Eg, whose waters eventually reach the Baikal Lake. The lake contains about 2% of the world’s fresh water. Tourists call it the ‘Switzerland of Mongolia’.
Today’s dinner will be “Khuushuur” which is flat, fried and traditional Mongolian dish. In the evening, we will meet the local horsemen who will accompany us on the whole horse trek and sturdy pony horses of Mongolia. Check the saddles and everything. Overnight in tourist ger camp near Khatgal village.

Day2. Horseback riding

Early the next morning we will start our journey. Load the luggage on the pack horses. All camping gears and food stuffs, baggage will be carried by horses. Then start the ride. Today we will ride over 50 km ride and the ride itself is over some difficult mountainous areas but the scenery is spectacular. We have to cross Khoridol Saridag Mountain Range by narrow mountain pass and should reach in right its side. This mountain range, Khoridol Saridag, is located between 2 great depressions, Khuvsgul Lake basin and Darkhad Meadow. Highest peak is 3093 m and about 130 km long. We might see wild animals. Overnight in tent.

Day3. Horseback riding

After breakfast we will start riding. Today we will enter to the Darkhad Depression. Darkhad Depression is a wide plain surrounded by 2000-3000m high mountains roughly the same size as Khuvsgul Lake basin. This fantastically beautiful place with countless rivers and containing over 300 small lakes. It is home of fishes. The area is center of shamanism. Overnight in tent.

Day7. Horseback riding

We will continue our riding towards to reindeer people. Today we will visit authentic Mongolian nomad family and see the how they produce their dairy products, how to milk their animals and taste Mongolian dairy products.
Today’s dinner is “Tsuivan” which is steamed noodle with meat and it is considered most favorite food for many Mongolian men. Overnight in tent.

Day8. Horseback riding

Horse riding through the forest in the northern mountains searching for the reindeer people summer place, it might be necessary to ride for some hours to arrive the reindeer people – depends their exact location. Finally we will reach to Duka people home. Set the tents in next of their teepee. Overnight in tent.

Day9. With Reindeer people.

With the Reindeer people, learn and participate their everyday life like riding reindeers, milking reindeers, processing skins and meats. You will enjoy the relaxing, beautiful and silent nature. There is endless photography opportunity. Overnight in tent.

Day10-11. Horseback riding

Say goodbye to the reindeer people, Set off on horseback again, this time on a linear route back to the lake. We will set the tents near the small river and is surrounded by forests. There is an abundance of wild berries which the locals make into a delicious jam. Overnight in tent.

Day12. Horseback riding

Today we can teach you some traditional ankle bone games of Mongols such as “horse racing”, “seizing ankle bones” and “knucklebone”. Today dinner is “Khorkhog” which is another traditional respectful Mongolian dish similar to BBQ and it is mutton or goat meat and large chunks of vegetable cooked in a metal pot with hot stones from a flaming fire. The ride will take you over varied terrain from wide, open river valleys, to rocky mountain slopes and finally down a forested mountain path until you reach the shores of the lake. Overnight in tented camp.

Day13. Horseback riding

Then follow the path to the lake, past locals making hay for cattle in the winter months that lie ahead. The final day of the ride will be along the edge of the lake, between the forested hills and the crystal blue expanse of water.

Day14. Khuvsgul Lake.

Today, we will catch shuttle entertainment cruise named “Sukhbaatar” and go boating on the lake. Then we will cross to Jankhai Mountain Pass. In the afternoon we will visit to local reindeer herder family. These reindeer people come down to Lake Khuvsgul in summer time to earn some cash for their livelihood. These people have used reindeer for transporting supplies and milking as well as eat the meat for centuries. Upon completion of our day’s sightseeing, we will drive to our tourist ger camp and have a dinner, traditional food “buuz”, steamed dumpling. Overnight in tourist ger camp in Jankhai coast.

Day15. Murun town.

Until lunch time, we will have free time and then we will drive back to Murun town (140 km). On the way we will see Uushig Deer Stone site. The site is largest deer stone site in the World and it is dates back over 3000 year.
Back in town in the lounge of the hotel you can surf the net and catch up with friends and family back home. Overnight at local hotel.

Day16. Fly back to Ulaanbaatar

Fly to Ulaanbaatar. After you arrived in the city, our driver will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel. End of the trip.
