What is local ger guest house of Mongolia? It is a small business run by nomadic families or local entrepreneurs near villages and national parks. Staying there is a great, simple way to experience the local lifestyle and Mongolian culture up close. Depending on the location, it offers a unique chance to see the everyday life of the countryside.

  • Staying at a local ger guest house is a fun and unique experience. Many of these hosts are real nomadic families who raise livestock. This gives you a wonderful chance to see or even take part in their authentic daily life and routines.
  • Unlike tourist ger camps that operate only in the summer, local ger guest houses are open year-round, including winter. Since the hosts live there full-time, you can experience Mongolian countryside in any season.
  • Local ger guest houses are improving every year. When you visit, you might find even better facilities and services than you expect.

Accommodation

The families build a few extra gers next to their own home for guests. Each ger usually has 4 beds, and clean, fresh linens are provided. Don’t worry—your ger is private, and no one outside your travel group will share it with you. Guides and drivers will always stay in a separate ger.

Food Service

Many well-established ger guest houses offer great food options. They usually serve authentic Mongolian meals or Russian-influenced Western dishes. In recent years, the dining experience has improved so much that some guest houses now feature their own dedicated restaurant buildings.

Shower & Toilet

These local accommodations are especially well-developed in the Gobi region. Most ger guest houses there now offer modern flush toilets, and many feature separate shower facilities. However, traditional wooden toilets are still common in some locations. If your guest house doesn’t have a shower on-site, don’t worry—you can easily use paid shower services at nearby soum centers or tourist camps to freshen up regularly.

Electricity

While guest houses near towns or central power lines have full electricity, some remote locations far from villages do not. However, you don’t need to worry about power. These remote guest houses use solar panels and power generators to charge phones and cameras, meaning you can easily charge your devices every day.
